I finished reading this book “The Catcher in the Rye” a 1951 novel by J. D. Salinger, a few months back and I wanted to share my views with others and in fact want to recommend reading it.Honestly this is one of the best timeless classic I have read recently. The book is all about a rich frustrated teenage rebellion who hates the false show off, forced customs and hypocrites in the society. Superb commentary by “JD Salinger” amazingly he touches the innocence and emotional side. The story is all about this teenage protagonist Holden, who doesn’t like schools knows that he is to be expelled from his school, leaves his school alone , spends a couple of days in New York where he meets various people, friends and goes though various experiences .
His conversation with his classmates , the hotel guy, his younger sister who he loves so much, his dead brother , the two nuns and with others are really amazing. At times you feel that you know him and his surroundings better than Holden, and for me that's the beauty. Though the book is set in early 1960's but it’s timeless, believe me you can experience yourself as the narrator. It definitely reminds you of your school days, classmates, teachers and people from your adulthood days. Another beauty in this book is, once you get hold of your copy , you will be addicted to finish it the same day , well you can do it just less than two hundred pages.
While I am highly recommending you to read this book, just now I opened a random page and picked these lines for you…… "He was even more depressing than the room was. He was one of those bald guys that comb all their hair over from the side to cover up the baldness. I’d rather be bald than do that."
I shared my thoughts about this book with one of my very good American friend (x colleague),as per him “The Catcher in the Rye” is for sure a timeless classic, one of top hundred controversial book of 20th century, was required reading for many students at one time or another in American schools”
I am sure you will enjoy reading this book.
